Ho now. found that tho residents m that street did not want the lamp shifted. Councillor Potit did not want the lamp shifted, but held that if two lump posts wero shifted it would please everybody. Ho would be m favour of shifting llio two lamps and they could then bo plaood at equal distances apart. Councillor H. Watts would not bo m favour of the fire brigado lamp being shiftod. Noticß of motion to roecind tbo resolution passed at tho former mooting was handed io by Councillor Potit. Several councillors spoke at length with regard to the disgraceful way tho lighting oontraot was oarriod out. On Sunday night five lamps m tho oontre of tho town wore out by 8 o'clock, and on almost any night a number of lights woro out, and glasses and lanterns were ao black that thero might as wo!l bo no light at all. Councillor A. Walt proposed, and councillor Petit seconded, "That tho contractor be given one month's notico to terminate his contract." — Tho motion was withdrawn m favour of giving the contractor written notice that if the lighting during tho month was not conduoted m a bottor manner, the mutter would come up for discussion at tho next meeting. In' connection with forming a foot path m Irsos Street, Councillor if. Watts said that a petition was boing got up to ask for the formation of tho footpath. — It was resolved that the engineer get tho work dono. Councillor Forabrook would liko to eeo tho oounoil send a duic cart round onco a week to remove the dust and ashes from tho ratepayers' houses. Tho mayor thought that tho matter oliould Do attended to at once. Councdlor A. Walt said that tho inspector of nuisances should teo that tho back yards wore kept, clean, Councillor Forsbrook said that ho would table a- raotiou for next aieeiing to deal with ' tho matter. The clork reported that there was a credit balance of £25 on the rent and building fund account at the Bank of Now Zealand.— Ho was instructed to pltico it st fixed deposit for 12 months. Tho works committee report, recommending the erection of a fence uround the section ' adjoining tbo County Council chambers, and that the section bo let, was road.— lt was ' decided that tbo report be adoptod, and that tenders bo called for tho work, to be Bent m by next mooting.
