CORRESPONDENCE.

BAD KOAD3.

TO THE EDITOR OTf THB TIMARU HERALD. Sib, — Some one, under the name of " Visitor," has caused a stir in the McKenz:p County Counoil, which ha» led to a paper discuision on the question. As a visitor in the Levels Boad District attending the recent show, I could not tolerate the hrge broken metal put on the road between the Wa-lidyke and LeCren's gully. Surely the overseer kno»i his duty, and if he has prepared specifications to admit of the large broken metal that now exists in these places, he has certainly a very poor idea of the requirements of "this length of road, for in patching a road you must have the gravel broken smaller than for an ordinary coating of gravel (say 20 yards to the chain) The fords between Temuka and Timaru are a disgrace to any board. The large boulders in the bott m are sufficient to break springs and wheel". For a few shillings' expenditure every ford could be made good between the t,mo above-mentioned places. Ihe gravel in every place where the road has been ro paired is far too large. I would advise the overseer to the Levels Road Board and McKenzie County Council to pay a visit over the Geraldine Knad District roads, and it will be money well #pei t for the two loeil bodies to allow I heir engineers to pay a visit to the road district ramed, for I am sure they will carrv away with them ideas that will be useful in their respective districts as to roa'l making, for it has become quite proverbial, when any persons are travelling through South Canterbury, to »ay that no roads come up to the Geraldine Road District roaHs, and jet this district is one of the youngest, if i.ot the youngest, in douth Canterbury, and can to-day boast of the best roads. I am, See., A Nbw Chum.
