THE MOUNT COOK ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE TIMARU HERALD. g lß| I read " Member's " short letter in your i-isue of to-day with no little regret Instead of having some kind of excuse to make for the utter apathy of the council to which he claims to belong, he contents himself with a childish speculation as to the probability of my hecoming inspsctor for said council, and asks that I should suggest improvements on other roads in his district. I do not think the council are likely to offer sufficient salary to inHnce a properly trained and qualified man to accept the post of overs er from them, and even if they obtained such an on» he w<>uld probably soon resign office unless some work was gsing on to keen him employed. If " Member" wishes me to pick out some other road as needing improvement, I would advise him to ride over the back road leading from Burke's Pass to /lbury. There he can study »he wonderful effect which a judicious mixture of tussock and clay exercises on road formation. He will probably also be led to wonder how it h that a »ho)» gangof roadmen areemployed on this comparatively unfrequented track whilst repairs to main roa 's remain in abeyance. I say without fear of contradiction that no attempt whatever hai been made to repair any one rood on the further side of Burke'B Pan, save the employment of one gang which is camped near the Whale'n Back on the Halrionjrow). As I remarked before, the Mount Cook road has been left untouched, »nd "Member" has failed to adduce any reason whatever why it should so he. The fact of other roads having received similar inattention cannot, so far as I can see, improve the situation. My name, address, and professional qualifixations will |be at "Member's" service •hen I see him trying to carry out hi* official duties with anything approaching thoroughness and energy; and when he advances initead of retards the progress of his district none will better appreciate the excellence of his work fchuj many a VIBITOB.
