(By Tklegkaph.) Wanganiti, March 20. A child aged 11 months, named Ford, was poisoned this morning by taking Rough on Rats. Its mother before going to bed last night placed the poison m the fireplace, and the child crept there before the fire was lit and picked it up. The child is not expected to recover. Wellington, March 20. Tho Cabinet has decided to refuse the terms proposed by Mr Pender to New Zealand re joining m tho subsidy to reduce cable charges on European lines. The Government considers tho proposed reductions paltry, and is decidedly opposed to the extension of time asked for. Ministers aro of opinion that the colonies Bhould make a decided effort to reduce rates between Australia and England to a fraction of the present charges. Dr Hector has made a tour of inspection over the Bimutaka ranges and failed to discover any signs of the rumoured steam jets along the road. The Fire Brigado Committee of tho City Corporation has drawn up a report for presentation at tho next meeting of the Council. It suggests that tho Btrength of tha Brigade bo at once increased from 24 to 30 men, and that tho Brigade bo placed under the charge of a captain who Bhall devote the wholo of his time to the duties of the office, and be responsible to the Council for the efficient condition of the plant and for the proper working of tho Brigade, and who shall be paid a salary of £200 per annum. - Nelson, March 20. The cricket match Wellington v. Nelson was won by the latter by an innings and 40 runs. CnniSTcmJECiT, March 21. Tho unemployed agitation here still continues. Yesterday fifty men waited on* the Mayor and represented that there were, m the aggregate, 200 children dependent on them, whom they wero unable to support for want of employment. Tho Mayor telegraphed to Government about tho matter. Duhedin, March 20. Sir Georgo Grey addressed a crowded and enthusiastic meeting at the Garrison Hall, and strongly opposed large borrowing. In regard to the East and West Coast Railway ho said that if it were carried on to Nelson it would not be reproductive for a very considerable poriod of time, but if the present Christchurch railway was united to Brunnerton, it would be most reproductive. Mr Burke, of the Dublin Brewery firm, promises to givo a cfilOO cup to the Jockey Clubs of every town he visits. At tho Police Court to-day Peter Silvertsen was charged with criminally assaulting his own daughter and remanded till Monday. After the address of Mr Leosmith at Milton last night, tho Bruce County Farmers' Lcaguo framed a resolution which was unanimously passed — " That the timo had come for the State to intervene on behalf of the mortgagors and tenants." Thoy also carried a resolution affirming the- advisability of a State bank.
