SOUTHERN ROAD BOARDS.
The following letter has been sent to us for publication : — Public Works Office, Christchurch. February 19, 1866. Sir. — I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 10th. instant acquainting me that at a meeting held at Timaru on the 9th. instant, at which representatives of the Waimate, the Levels, the Geraldine, and the Mount Cook Road Districts, and of the Timaru Municipality were present, a resolution was carried unanimously to the following effect, namely : — •'That this meeting views with regret the attempt of the Government to compel the outlying Districts to tax themselves, and are resolved to resist to the utmost so long as the main roads remain almost impassible m bad weather, from never having been properly formed, while at the same time they are prepared to rate themselves for district roads as required. In the event of the Government continuing m their intention, the Road Boards will have but one course to pursue, viz, to dismiss their staffs m consequence of want of funds." In reply, while the Government are gratified to observe that there is some probability of the Districts referred to rating themselves, I am directed to refer you to the circular from this office of the 2nd hist, and to inform you that the Government still regret their inability to advance any sums of money to the Road Boards above referred to. I have. &c. , F. E. Stewart, Secretary for Public Works. The Chairman of the Levels Road Board.
