A man named John Thomas W hito has been committed for trial for obtaining large sums of money by false pretences. The wreckage of the ' Taranaki' was sold by Messrs Tonks and disposed of as follows :-Wreck, £22, J. Smith; wreckage above high water mark (not cargo), £6 10s, J. Smith; linen, Ac, as per steward's inventory, saved from the wreck, £54, Henderson and Macfarlane; 4 boats, 16 oars, Ac, £56, Henderson and Macfarlane. Mr Smith intends to take immediate steps for the recovery of the machinery and other property which he has become purchaser of.
