SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.

(PEB PBESS AGENCY.) Wellington, Tuesday. The ship ' Hydrabad,' which has been so long on the beach near Otaki, has been moved seaward about one hundred feet, and with favourable weather it is considered certain the ship can be saved. A presentation of majolica ware was made to Mr Batkin, of the Treasury, by the officers of that department on his leaving the department. A gang of men have been taken down to the wrecked ship' South Minster' on behalf of the South British Insurance, and they have taken charge. Captain Boile is of opinion';that with due energy a large quantity of her cargo and spars, and ridging, may be saved. At present the vessel has holes in her bottom, and about 13 feet of water in her hold, and her cargo is washing about in all directions. The sailors, who live ashore in tents, have done nothing to save any of ' the cars.o, nor even clue up any of the sails, which are flapping-in the wind the same as when she went ashore.

Mr Boardman, manager of the Wellington office of the South British, says the company's loss on the vessel does cot exceed one thousend. It is said that Sir John _ Eichardson still continues dangerously ill. Judge Gillies left for Napier, to-day. The departure of the outward Suez mail has been postponed until Saturday, the 28th inst., instead of Friday, the 27th. The Hon Mr Sheehan, accompanied by Major Brown and v Mr Parris, left this morning for the South by way of the coast. Ashbubton, Tuesday. At the sitting of the quarterly Licensing Court to-day, an important question arose when the case of the Kailway Hotel, South Eakaia, was brought before the Court. It appeared that the present occupant of the house (Wallace) had sent in no application. The original lineensee (Grant) had sold the house to Devery, who at the time obtained a temporary transfer of the license till today (3rd December). Not long after Devery becanle possessor of the house and premises ho sold his interest in the business to Wallace, and the question, as the Court took it, arising out of these circumstances was whether the house should be closed forthwith, or whether the original license still remained good. The Bench considered that the original license still existed, but that no one except Grant, or someone specially authorised by him, could continue to oarry on the business of the house. Anyone who should continue to sell liquors in the house would have to do so at his own risk.

Dunedin, Tuesday. The Morning Herald points out a blunder in the Administration Act, 1878. The omission of the word illegitimate before the word female, in the 36tb clause of the Act, has the eftect of transferring the property of any female who dies intestate and without issue to her mother, and to the heirs of her mother. Further police changes are spoken of. It is said that Superintendent Meldon is to take charge ot the Canterbury district, and Superintendent Broham will be transferred to Dunedin. At a meeting of the City Council today a letter was read from the Commissioner of Police, promising that obstruction to foot traffic, caused by betting men congregating outside the Empire Hotel, should receivo attention.
