NOTES FROM LONDON.

AMERICA STRADDLING THE PACIFIC.

WITH ONE FOOT ON YAP,

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright,

(Received Sept. 21, 11.55 a.m.)

LONDON, Sept. 26. British naval strategists regard President Wilson’s claim to the Island of Yap in the Caroline group as importantly affecting the future balance of forces in the Pacific. It appears that the destruction of Vail was referred to a special conference which will later decide the questions concerning the German cables taken over during the war. President. WiSkon admits that the American claim to the Island is. due to a strong report from naval exports who insist on the necessity of American bases in the western Pacific. This may bo inspired primarily by American interests in the Philippines, but America’s decision to straddle the Pacific obviously will have an important bearing on the defence of Australasia. — Aus.-N.Z.
