THE NAVAL SUBSIDY.
NEW ARRANGEMENTS Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 6. Mr. Massey stated that New Zealand is- paying a subsidy of £IOO,OOO yearly to the British Navy, but in future this would go towards the upkeep of the cruiser Canterbury. It was also arranged that- wo should have a vessel for training purposes to replace tho Amokura, probably a sloop-of-war ot between 2600 and 3000 tons. If Parliament derided that New Zealand could have a- .submarine or two as a- gift, tho Admiralty had practically decided to station several light cruisers in the neighbourhood of New Zealand ns a sub-squadron to the China fleet. These vessels would, no doubt, make New Zealand their headquarters.
