KITCHENER SCHOLARSHIPS

FOB AGRICULTURAL STUDENTS

Particulars of the Kitchener Afemorial Scholarships (instituted by Colonel R. H. Rhodes, who donated a sum of £1000) wore received by the Taranaki Education Board on AVednesday from the department. The letter stated 1 that the excessive cost of carrying out the original proposal (scholarships for the purpose of training naval and military cadets) had caused an alteration to bo made, and it had been decided that the scholarships should he for agricultural students. The idea was to give practical scientific training to young men between the ages of 16 and 20 who wore the sons of soldiers or sailors who had been killed at the war or had become permanently disabled. It -whuffl be necessary for the boys to have completed- a course in agricultural and dairy science at a recognised technical college, or, as/an alternative, a two years’ course in' agriculture at a .secondary or district high school. The scholarships would be'of tho annual value of £SO, and would bqAcnable for twh or three years at an agricultural college or a Government experimental farm, such as Weraroa. In the selection of candidates special stress was to be laid on the Results of examination in agricultural or dairy science and other subjects usually deemed essential to an agricultural course suitable for pupils of secondary school ago. The department was appealing to the .public to augment the fund started by Colonel Rhodes. Already a further £260 had been promised and the Government would subsidise subscriptions at £ for £ ijp ffo £IOOO. Subscriptions to the fund could he sent to Colonel Rhodes or to the Director of Education, Wellington. It was hoped to make the first award of scholarships this year. Air. Dixon said the matter was very important and should be brought prominently under the notice of agricultural students as an incentive to them. The board decided to give the matter every publicity. '
