Dr. A. W. Avorill, Bishop of Auckland, returns north to-night. The King had his first outing on Wednesday, when ho visited Dowager Queen Alexandra, whose 71st birthday was celebrated yesterday. A Sydney cablegram states that Mr. Ashmead Bartlett will shortly visit Australia to lecture on the Gallipoli campaign. A London cablegram states that Mr. R. W. Dalton, of the Board of Trade, will succeed Mr. Wickham as British Trade Commissioner. His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) arrives in New Plymouth to-morrow night to preside at the sittings of the Supreme Court here next week.
Mr. J. N. Bullard, of Inglewood, has been selected for appointment on probation as an N.C.O. for the 13th Reinforcements and is required to report at Trentham Camp on December 14. Tho Waitara Mail understands that Lieutenant Humphrey, of tho Inglewood Senior Cadets, has been appointed to the command of C Company, 11th Regiment. Mr. W. R. Johns has been appointed to the same company, holding the position of second-lieutenant, on probation. Second-Lieutenant Cameron is to sit forthwith for the first lieutenant’s examination.
Tho death occurred at Wanganui on Wednesday of Mrs. George Walker, mother of Mrs. J. F. Holloway, formerly of New Plymouth. . Deceased, who was in her 82nd year, arrived with her parents (the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tuffin) and her brother (Mr. George Tuffin, of W’angamii, who is still hale and hearty) over 70 years ago. They landed at New Plymouth on November 7, 1842, from the ship Blonhiem, the third vessel to reach New Plymouth from the Old Land. Twelve or thirteen years afterwards Mrs. Walker went with her husband to Wanganui, where they commenced farming operations on the Mission Line, subsequently settling at Aramoho, where they resided for nearly half a, century. Tho late Mrs. Walker experienced the many vicissitudes incidental to pioneering life, including the troublous period during the Maori wars on the coast.
