STRATFORD.
ISOM OCE RESIDENT AGENT. September 12.—A crowd of people awaited the arrival at tlio station of the train conveying wounded soldiers to their homes. There was, however, no one for Stratford. A few ladies boarded the train with flowers and other amenities, and the crowd gave several rounds or hearty cheers for the battered heroes of Gallipoli. The result of the cheese factories’ conference at Hawera appears to give satisfaction to dairymen. Sevenpence is recognised as a good price and a fair one. ft is' the equivalent of to-day’s quotation on the London market, and about mid-way between the ante-war price and the average of last season. No doubt there will he in some quarters accusations of greed in not at once accepting the Government offer of 6fd, but there is no reason why cheesomakers should he singled out and forced to sell their produce at before-the-war prices whilst paying advanced ■ rates for pretty well everything they have to buy. Cheese at_ 7d ,is as cheap a food as can be bought at present. An oM resident, a German, was refused the old age pension at Friday’s court. His difficulty is that he has property in Berlin. For all practical purposes just now> it might as well be in the moon, but it constitutes' a fatal bar to the pension. In the meantime he is practically destitute.
