Corporal Harvey, whose name appears in a recently-published list of wounded, belongs to Fitzroy. ! Private E. H. Alabaster, who has been wounded at the Dardanelles, resided in the Pungarchu district. A Christchurch telegram reports the death of Mr. John aged 75. He was formerly member for Ashburton. The death, at Dunedin, is announced of Mr. James Jago, well known on the concert platform throughout the Dominion. A Sydney message states that Private H, F. Spooner. who has been killed in action, was formerly well-known, in Auckland and 'Wellington. Air. E. W. Rhodes, of,the local Magistrate’s Court staff, has received notice of transfer to the Supreme Court Office at Wellington. A London cable announces the death, at the age of 62, of Sir Claude MacDonald. formerly British Ambassador to Japan, a defender of the Legations during the Boxer rising of 1900. Mr. Guthrie, stationmaster at Turakina, has received notice of transfer to New Plymouth, to fill the vacancy on the railway staff caused by the enlistment of Captain Horsnell. Onr ’Wellington correspondent wires that Mr. H. J. H. Blow, Under-Secre-tary of Public Works, is at present indisposed, and is undergoing medical treatment at Rotorua, In alighting from a tramcar on his way to Parliament House on Friday, the Hon. R. K. Simpson; M.L.C., had a fall which occasioned dislocation of a shoulder. After the dislocation had been reduced by Dr. Thacker, M.P., and Dr. Newman; M.P., ! he was taken to a private hospital for further treatment. Ashburton reports the death of Mr. Augnston Hutton Shury, for many years manager of the Ashburton branch of the Union Bank. While in Dunedin he had charge of the bank’s gold buying business, ana purchased the first parcel of gold brougnt to town by the late Gabrieli Reid. In later years ho took an active interest in acclimatisation matters. , Mr. E. B. Welch, formerly of Stratford, and now residing in Wanganui, has received advice from the Defence Office, Melbourne, that his son, William, aged 22, was killed in action at the Dardanelles on August 7. Trooper W. B. Welch was in Melbourne at the outbreak of the war, and enlisted in the Sth Light Horse, 3rd L.H. Brigade. He well known and had many mends in the Toko and Pohokura districts. His brother, Stuart Welch, is serving with the 3rd'■ Australian Hospital at Lemnos. •
