Tile members of the Amalgamated Workers’ Association employed by the Federal Government, who demand £4 for a 44-hour week, are causing much, inconvenience in the shipping trade. They are being supported by other workers, who are striking in sympathy. A peculiar feature is that Mr. Hylands, Director of Lands in the Northern Territory, and a special magistrate, who is a member of the association, is amongst those called out, and was allotted picket duty at Government House. To overcome the difficulty, Hylands obtained holiday leave. A SENSIBLE STEP. (Received May 2, 11,20 a.m.) PORT DARWIN, May 2. Mr. Bylands has resigned his membership of the Workers’ Union and has resumed duty.
