STRATFORD.

(From Our Resident Agent.) April 28.—0il Saturday afternoon a train-load of young.men pulled-up at Stratford railway station and remained fully a quarter of an hour before resuming its journey to New Plymouth, i'et the Stratford publicans benefited not one solitary sixpence. The records of the ages may be searched in vain for such an amazing phenomenon. The cause is not to be found in the tightness of the money market, nor were the travellers returning delegates from a No-license Convention. They were victims of militarism returning from the camp at Oringi and there wove ’pickets at the exits from the station. 0 tempora, O mores!. The times are out of joint. There were only a score of householders at the annual meeting to-night, and there was difficulty in finding .a committee. Eventually the did one was patched up, Mr. Staples taking the place of ■ Mr. A. Stewart (who is leaving the district). Mr. P. Skoglund is again chairman. It is strange ..there should be : so little interest displayed .this year, the annual report and balance-sheet disclosing a most satisfactory state of affairs. Mr.' Fookes, who was in the chair, suggested that it was duo to there being so little room for criticism that there were so few critics in the room, and that with a view to securing a good meeting-of householders next year the committee should take steps to assure a had report.
