The Royal Geographical Society cele-. brated the 400th anniversary of Vasco do Balboa’s discovery of the Pacific Ocean. [Vasqo de Balboa (1475-1517), a Spanish discoverer, was born at Xoros. Ho accompanied Rodrigo, de Bastidas in his voyage- of discovery to the western seas (1501). In 1513 he discovered the Pacific and took possessipn of it in the name of Spain. Jealousy on the part of his enemy Pedrarias Davila (whose daughter he had married) led to his execution.!
