James Patrick Hayes, a trainer, sued Georg© William Smith, a bookmaker, of Leeds, for slander, in calling plaintiff a blackmailer. Hayes’ counsel admitted that his client had been warned off a course in Tasmania, but was subsequently reinstated. Smith employed Hayes as trainer, but they quarrelled. A verdict was given for defendant, while Smith obtained £5 damages on a counter charge.
