Mr. F. C. J. Bellringer, chairman of the Hospital Board, has received the following reply to the telegram which he sent to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon, G. W. Russell, asking for greater representation for local bodies at the conference which is .to be held at Wellington shortly : “Thanks for your wire suggesting increased representation at Bocal Government Conference. Regret impossible to increase the numbers already arranged for. You suggest five representatives from your district. If same proportion of increase were made all over New Zealand, the conference would consist of about three hundred representatives. Only a thousand pounds was voted for the entire expenses of the conference, and it is not intended to have more than seventy persons attending, as it is considered that number will be largo enough for all prictical and useful purposes. Russell.” Talking about crooked spines in females, it is an astonishing fact that this disease is prevalent to an alarming extent amongst workers of sowing machines in factories, etc. This is because the operator cannot sit upright at her work; she cannot sit opposite the treadle and needle-bar at the same time. An absurdly simple invention has been brought out by the Standard Sewing Machine Co. whereby this serious defect ia obviated. The needle works right opposite the eye of the operator, and she can sit perfectly upright. This remarkable invention should be hailed with delight by all interested in the health of girls. The J.V.
