A great cloud of sand, thousands of feet high, driven at the rate of forty miles an hour, wa^ seen approaching. It plunged the place' with 'impenetrable darkness. In a critical moment a thunderstorm broke, the rain dissipating the dust. It was very hot weather at the time. Broken Hill had a siinikr experience. Mr O'Callaghan, Government Dairy Expert, has completed a series of experiments with fishy butter. He succeeded in isolating and cultivating the microorganism which causes fishiness. Mr O'Callaghan produced a fishy condition by inoculating sterilised cream with cultures. Adelaide, January &S. Four thousand pounds vyorlh of damage was done at the Semaphore by a cyclone. Sir Jjhn Forrest shortly returns to Sydney to take the Defence portfolio. Mr Drake takes the Post Office in the Federal Cabinet. Ueceiveil January 28, 9.13 a.m. Melbourne, January 28. Mr Seddon has had an interview with the Postmaster-General in reference to delivering New Zealand penny letters. The Pacific cable question, which Mr Seddon advocated in opposition to the Cape Cable, was also discussed. Mr Gurr replied that he was strongly of opinion that the Eastern Extension Cable Co.'s offer should be accepted at once. He was disposed favourably to consider the delivery of New Zealand letters.
