THE COLCHESTER MURDER CASE. Wellington, January 25. In relation to the Blatch case a letter from the Chief of Police states that a number of Tacoma citizens have identified the photographs as being that of Lillywhite whom they knew well as a painter and decorator. A statement is «nclosed from F. C. Clarke, whom the Chief of Police warrants to be a reputable citizen, and who says Lillywhite was never beyond his reach from 1889 to July 1894 when he saw him off by the steamer to New Zealand — ( the murder occurred in December, 1893). The Chief of Police states it would be easy to get an affidavit of identification from a number of reputable citizens. The portrait of l<ill> white in the Trades Union group is also sent. Mr Skerrett says it has been conceded that if the documents fou::u in the accused man's possession were his property, he could not possibly be Blatcb. This question, he claims, is now set at rest by the correspondence. THE VISIT OF IMPERIAL TROOPS. The Mayor was informed this afternoon by the Acting-Premier that the Imperial troops, including the Indian Contingent, will arrive iv New Zealand on the 2nd proximo, and will travel through New Zealand, according to the time-table already fixed. They are due in Wellington about the sth proximo. A BUTCHERS' DISPUTE. Dunedin, January 25. The Conciliation Board met to-day to near a dispute between the Dunedin and Suburban Operatives Butchers' Union and the Master Butchers. After representatives of both parties had put thier views before the Board, it was agreed to hold a conference, the result being that later on it was announced that an understanding had been arrived at with regard to the matter in dispute. The Union, however, has yet to notify its approval of the agreement. During the hearing of the case, it was stated that notwithstanding the large increase in retail prices for meat, th< butchering business did not pay, and it was stated in support that, recently, thirteen butchers in the city and suburbs bad to give up business. OTAGO UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS. The Recess Committee of tbe Senate met this morning at the Otago University to consider the results of the matricula-. tion and junior scholarships, solicitors, general knowledge, and medical preliminary examinations. There were present: The Chancellor (Sir Jas. Hector) and Professors Shand, Sale, and Cook. The following have gained junior scholarships for the year 1900, the names being in order of merit: — I. Wairoa, January 26. At the Magistrate's Court, Honi Poti. the central figure in the events leading up to the prosecution and acquittal of the Wairoa Gunrdian for publishing alleged indecent matter, was committed for trial on six chirgob. The evidence disclosed the fact that witchcraft, and tohungaisra have a t< rrible hold on the native mind. THE WHARF LABOURERS' DISPUTE.
