PEINOE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY.

The close holiday observed on Wednesday, added to the splendid weather that prevailed, induced most of the townspeople to leave their homes and participate in the games and amusements that were set down for that day. In the morning THE VOLUNTEERS AND CADETS, headed by the band, marched from the reclaimed land to Poverty Flat, where they were inspected by Colonel Stapp. After the feu, de joie was firod the two companies were put through bo me manoeuvres, and then did a march past. The band played them down town again, where they were dismissed. A great number of the Rifles went to the butts to practice, while the Cadets went on the beach and practised measuring distances. OPENING OF THE BOWLING GREEN. The New Plymouth Bowling Club opened their green for the season on the Prince of Wales' Birthday. There was not a very largo muster in the morning, but, during the afternoon, there was a very fair gathering, including many ladies. Shortly after 11 o'clock, Mr Paul, the President of the Club, stepped on to the green, and, addressing the members and visitors present, said it was the third seaBon they were opening, and that he hoped the members would maintain the prestige they had gained in the past, during it. tie regretted to find they had lost a great deal of their strength owing to many of their best members leaving the place, but this -only should inspire tbe others to practice assiduously in order to become proficient players. He would mention to the now ! members the desirability of their procur- i ing a pair of bowls of their own. He also j asked the players-to have some oare oE the ; green. Ho would not, however, detain them any longer, for he saw by the looks of those standing before him that they wanted to begin to play ; he would, therefore, now declare the ground open for the season. Tho green was found to be in excellent order, and play beia^; commenced was kept up during the day by the members, who played several well-contested matches amongst themselves. THE NEW PLYMOUTH CO. About fifteen members of the New Plymouth Cricket Club assembled in Mr. Mitchinson's paddock in the morning, and ■sept up scratch games until 5 o'clock in the evening. They spent a most enjoyable day, THE TENNIS CLUBS also took advantage of tbe line weather, and indulged in BOrne good games on their respective courts. THE WAITARA SPORTS at the Karaka grove were a great suocoss, both as regurJs the uttendauce of the publio, and the amusements provide.!.
