RAHOTU.
fJ'noM ova own ookrespomdentl October 19.— A special meeting of tho Sciiool Committee was held on the 2lst September last. Present : Messrs. A. Ai.derson, F. M. Chapman, L. Williamß, A. Coffey, E. J. Morgan, and G. W. Gane (chairman).— Mr. Coffoy proposed, and Mr. Chapman seconded, " That tho Board be respectfully requested to send a teacher, temporarily, while taking step 3to appoint one permanently." Carried unanimously. — Tho object the Chairman had in calling this meeting was that he had received a letter from the Board, dated the 15th, saying they had appointed Mr. Bell to take charge of the school on the 19th. This proceeding he objected to, and wrote to the 3oard objecting to any teacher taking charge of the school without the Committee's consent. It is tho Committee's prerogative, and they do not intend to be isnorefi by the Board. Consequently Mr. Bell di.l not come. If be hud he would not have been allowed to take charge of the school. After the Committee had done what suited them, Mr. Ball was allowed to take charge on Monday, tho 26th, the Chairman being present, and handing over all things in connection with the school.
A special meeting of! the Committee was held on the 13th instant. Present: Messrs. Anderson, Coffey, Chapman, Sullivan, and G. W. Gane (chairman). — Correspondence was read from the Education Board forwarding names of three applicants for the position of teacher of the school, viz., Messis. Brake, Bell, and Klaus, but as neither holds a certificate, only a temporary appointment could be made. Mr. Bell was selected by the Committee. — Circular from Bell Block School Committee re a meeting to be held in New Plymouth on the sth November was read, at which some members will attend. — Some other formal business was done, and the meeting terminated .
The settlers Hviny between the Okahu River and the Opua Road hnvo called a meetins» to be held at Mr. Malcolm's, on tbe Kiua Road, on Monday next, to ccc what steps should be taken to get a school erected in that locality. It is monstrous the way the Board spends money in every other direction but hero, where there are about sixty children, and every show of increasing. We cannot get a school, v. teacher oeing available, without tho necessity of a toacher's residence being built. It ia to be hoped this conference will be able to take steps to either aid in abolishing the Board, or do something to see that we in the country are fairly dealt with. It is evident that steps require to be taken to get some alteration in the administration of the education money. I would ask, why should we have to beg and pray for what we are justly entitled to, or send deputations, causing expenses to be thrown on settlers, to attend the Board ? When the meeting is held I will send you a full report. If the members had reduced Mr. Hurray by £100 per annum, that would have nearly been sufficient to build us a BcllOOl.
