[PBESS ASSOCIATION.] MORE GOLD FINDS. Auckland, October 20. A piece oi a blook of stone sent down from Patetere for building purposes was assayed yesterday, when the result was a yield of 3dwt. 6gr. of gold and 2dwt. of silver to the ton, valued at 12s per ton. This stone certainly was not " salted," and it seems that a payable goldfield exists at. Patetere. A RUN DOWN. About 10 p.m. yesterday the Birkenhead ferry steamer ran down a cutter anchored in the harbour. The cutter filled and sank immediately. It is believed no one was aboard her. ART EXHIBITION. An Art Exhibition was opened last night at the Art Gallery, by Mr. F. A. Maokechnie. There is an excellent collection of new works by local artists. FIRE AT PATE A. Patea, Ootober 20. A small corrugated iron house at Alton, called the "Woodville Hotel, was burnt to the ground last night. Mr. Moss was the licensee, and Mr. Aruudel the owner of the property. Nothing was saved, the occupants only managing to escape in their night olothes. Insurance : £250 on building in Standard ; stock and furniture, £300 in Norwich Union. LARGE FAILURE AT WANGANUI. Wanganui, Ootober 20. W. H. Watt, an old settler here, and formerly M.H.R. for Wanganui, and a member of Provincial Council of Wellington, filed a petition in bankruptcy. He has had heavy losses in land and business speculations. JUDGE WARD IN CANTERBURY. Chbistchuboh, October 20. Judge Ward took his seat on the Bench this afternoon, and was welcomed by a large number of members of the Bar. WAITOA GOLDFIELD SCANDAL. Mr. James Durward, a shareholder in a company formed here to work the Waitoa goldfields, and who is acting as many expect in Auckland in conneotion with a Christchurch syndicate, has sent the following telegram to a friend here : — " Don't sell my shares — would not be fair, as I am now satisfied something is wrong."
