NARROW ESCAPE OF TWO YOUNG 1 ' - MEN. ' ' ' Two young men who went on a • boating excursion yesterday at Waitara had a narrow escape from being drowned. Between 4 and 5 o'clock in the afternoon Alfred and Frederick Fredo, whilst sailing in the Waitara river, got down to the bar, and it being ebb tide their boat got drawn into thu surf. One sea struck the boat, knocking Frederick out of it. His brother threw the oars to him, 'but he did not succeed in getting them. He, however, managed to reach the boat again, which by this time was nearly full o£ water, and drifting over the bar. The two young men baled the boat out as well as they could, and then awaited their fate. The Harbour Master, Mr. John Cameron, witnessed the , accident, and, securing the assistance of Mr. Dugdale, jun., and Mr. Harry Waller, took another boat and lowed through a nasty sea after the drifting boat. Having secured it to them, they towed it on to the beach. Mr. Cameron did this as it was c*urk at this time, aad he - did not care to venture across the bar. Everyone speaks with praise at the conduct of the rescuing party, who by their piompt action- no doubt saved the lives of the two young men. - ~
