TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Taranaki County Council met on Wednesday. Present : Messrs. J. Elliot (chairman), Price, Syme, Kelly, Hare, Morris, Smith, and Cutfield. Mr. Gam's request. — A letter was received from Mr. K. Turnbull, Chairman of the Public Petitions Committee, requesting information respecting the petition from Mr. G. W. Gane, of Rahotu, in whioh he claimed compensation for tho district of j Parihaka being excluded from tho provisions of the " Dog Registration Act." — The Clerk was instructed to reply, giving tho information required. Moluroa Metalling. — A letter was received from Mr. H. George, Chairman of tho Omata Road District, asking the Council to metal tno portion of the road leading from the Cou&ty road to the Moturoa Hotel. — The Council declined to accede to the nqrest. Crushing Machine. — A letter was received from tho Hawcra County Council, requesting cortaia information as to tho stonecrushing machine, such as the cost on the ground, daily output, uud tho cost per yard. — Tho Clrkk stated that ho had already supplied the desired information. Rabbit Nuisance. — A circular was receivud from the Chairman of the Joint Committee on the rabbit nuisance, asking for information. — The clerk was requested to answer. Refund.— Tho Stratford Town Boud asked by letter a refund of tho dog tax collected iv Stratford for tho year 1884. — The Council refused to comply with the request. Patea Bridge,— Tho Town Board of Stratford also wroto requesting certain alterations to be made in the portion of tho improvements to tho l\itea bridge that the Council li.id agreed to make. — It was decided by the Council that the work had far bettor stand still for two mouths at least, as carting over new roa'is would only make matters worse. W'lhoakailio Stone. — Mr. C. K. Stock wrote, complaining tint parties to whom the County ovetßeer had given permis&ion were in tho habit of pulling down his fenoes, and taking carts upon his land for tho purpose of collecting stones from the Waiwakaiho rivej, thus causing very great inconvenience through his cattle getting out. Ho stated that ho had complained to the Chairman, but that the Chairtm.ii
said the Council was justified in allowing people to do so. — In the discussion which ensued, one or two of the members expressed themselves that it was a great hardship to Mr. Stock to be subjected to such inconvenience ; and that great damage had been caused to the bridge and unnecessary expense incurred through stones being taken away indiscriminately. It was also stated that a largo quantity of stone had been taken by carts employed by the syndicate for the now street in New Plymouth, an action which they had no right to do. It was agreed that the chairman interview Mr. Stock, and couio to an agreement ; and the following resolution, proposed by Mr. Kelly, and seconded by Mr. Cdtfield, was also agreed to " That the county foreman be instructed to watch the gravel reserve at Waiwakaiho. and allow no persons to take stono or gravel except where pointed out, and where no damugo can be done, on such terms as the County Council approves of.' 1 Gravel Offer.— -Uu G. Bancroft, of Inglewood, wrote offering to supply gravel from the pit on Lib land for the use of tho County Council at Id. per cubic yard. It was agreed that it was no use to begin stono breaking until the roads are fit to bear tho pressure of tha carts. - Waitara Street. — A letter was received from tho Waitara Town Board asking the Council to metal McLean-street to the full width and thus avert damage to the footpaths and drains. Mention vras also made that Mr. J. R. Clark suffered great inconvenience from surface water draining on to . his property; and tho Board thought that as the Council received upwards of £200 per annum in rates from Waitara town they should metal the. street and take away the surface water. — Mr. Kelly proposed, and Mr. Symb seconded, " That the Council is willing to contribute the sum of £20 towards metalling the portion of McLean-street asked for in the letter of the Town Clerk of the 6th inst., the work to be subject to the control of the chairman." — An amendment was moved by Mr. Price, and seconded by Mr. Morris, " That the Council is not in a position to entertain the request." — The amendment was put and carried, on the following division :—: — For the amendment: Messrs. Hare, Price, Morris, Smith, and Cutfield; Noes: Messrs. Kelly, Syme, and the chairman. — On Mr. Kelly's motion, seconded by Mr. Syme, it was decided, " That the County overseer bo authorised to make provision for remedying the grievanoe complained of by Mr. J. R. Clark, Waitara, with respect to the drainage from the road to his property." After the dinner adjournment Mr. Kelly was voted to the chair in the absence of Mr. Elliot. JEncroarJimcnt. — A letter was received from Mr. N. Schumacher, o£ Inglewood, forwarding a memorandum from the Chief Surveyor respecting an error that had been made iv the survey o£ Mr. Schumacher's section, whereby the Mountain Road encroached thereon. Ho requested the Council to grant him. compensation for the land bo encroached upon. — It was moved by Mr. Syme, seconded by Mr. Smith, and carried '"That the chairman be authorised to arrange with Mr. Schumacher for the land encroached upon by the Mountain Road, and submit a report to the Council for approval next meeting." Amalgamation. — It was moved by Mr. Syme, seconded by Mr. Outfield," and carried, " That the petitions received from the Barrett, Upper Hurford, and Omata Road Districts asking that the said districts be amalgamated be referred back again until the provisions required by the • Acts have been complied with." Striking a Mate. — Mr. Syme gave notice of motion that he would move at the next . meeting "That the Council strike a rate of f d in the £ on all ratable property within the county." Accounts. — Acconnts amounting to £454 9s. 7d. were passed for payment, thus making up the overdraft to date £1438 14s. lOd. Thia concluded the business.
