INDECENT ASSAULT. Auckland, April 29, At tbe Police Court to-day Charles Alexander Martin was charged with indecently assaulting Rachael Fletcher. The case was adjourned in consequence of tho absence of witnesses, bail beingallowed. CORRUPT PRACTICES WITII TOTALISATOR. Henry Richardson, James Corbott, Richard James Feltus, and Leonard Adams were charged under the Vagrant Act for playing with a totalisator at a game of chance at Ellerslie Racecourse. The totalisator was produced in Court. The charge against Feltus was withdrawn, as he was only engaged as clerk. Francis Short, hairdi'esser, stated that he paid for a ticket on King Quail. Three other tickots wero also taken on the same horse. Ho went and watched the race, which King Quail won, and when he returned to tho totalisator the proprietor offered him 14<s. A dispute ensued ; and the proprietor said someone had altered the numbers on the totalisator. Eventually he got his £12. William Booth, bootmaker, gave corroborative testiraouy. William Robert Rowntou said he saw only four up when the race was won. Feltus deposed that Richards only received the money, and Corbett worked the machine. Witness mado the entries and stamped the tickots. Fourteen subscribers to King Quail were entered after tbe race had been won. Detective Jeffreys is being examined. BREACH OF CONTRACT. ! At the Supreme Court, in the case of Smith v. Palmer, the plaintiff claimed £3000 damages for broach of contract. After hearing the evidence, the jury awarded one farthing damages. SIR G. GREY'S POLITICAL MEETING. Sir G. Grey is expected from Kawau on Tuesday next, aud will address a meeting at the Theatre Royal. BURNED TO DEATH. A girl named Annie Wallace, aged three years and five months, was fatally burned at Hnnua. BANK ACCOUNT. * Wellington, April 29. At a special meeting of the County Council, held last night, to consider a letter received from the Manager of ! the Bank of New Zealand on the sub- ! ject of the bank account, it was resolved, "That the various banks be asked as to the terms on which they are prepared to do the banking account of the Corporation, and what rate of interest they will give for money now lying at call in the Bank of New Zealand. INQUIRY RE MANAWATU ACCIDENT. An official inquiry into tho circumstances connected with tho accident to the boiler of tho steamer Manawatu was held this afternoon.
