THE MOUNTAIN ROAD.

[from the patea mail.]

A deputation of Normanby settlers, consisting of Messrs. C. E. Gibson, P. H. Brett, F. Hnngor,,aud F. Finlayson, waited on the County Council on the 6th, and explained tbo wishes of settlors, whom they had been sent to represent, in regard to the proposed construction of tho Mountain Eoad. Mr. Gibson spoko at tolerable length, and reviewed past action on tho part of Government and of the settlers, in regard to tho question. Settlers had been repeatedly assured that the line would go through Normanby, and had been induced to bnild, and spend money in othor improvemonts, solely on the strength of the assurances which had been given. Mr. Gibson pointed out the relative advantagos and disadvantages of the different rontes, and stated that Normanby people would be quite satisfied if the road were continued from the end of the present metalled road, through Nor man by, and then along lino on which telegraph polos had been erected. By following tho lino indicated, there would bo no compensation claims, and metal being handy, a saving of fully £100 would be offected. If tho County Council decided on the routo indicated it would satisfy every party. A petition was started at mid-day on Saturday (2nd March), at Hawera, for presentation to the County Council askiug that tho original line of Mountain Road might bo adhered to, instead of turning off and through Norman br. Nearly 120 signatures wero obtained in about eighteen hours. Mr. Davidson was put in charge of tho pelition.
