The s.s. Taranaki arrived here yesterday at about 4 o'clock. The captain reports that ho left Nelson ou Saturday, tho 9th, at 2 p m.", wind north, and moderate up t0\3.30, when it increased to a gale, with very heavy sua. At 4 p.m. he bore up for the Toug.i auchorago, and brought up at 6 p.m. During the night it was blowiug a fierce gale from the N.W., barometer 29.30. At 4 am. the wind moderated, aud ho left agaiu at 5 a.m. At 7 a.m. he passed Gape Farewell. Experienced strong westerly winds and heavy sea. Sho took her departure for Manukau at 6 p.m. Mr. Stephen Massett, the distinguished composer and elocutionist, has arrived in Wellington. Ho will travel up tho coast, aud will shortly give one of his popular drawing-room entertainments here. Mr. Massett is spoken moat highly of by the Press everywhere, aud brings with him the very highest credentials from Mr. R. J. Creighton and othor ex-New Zealanders, now living iv Sau Fraueisco.
