tary the Speotator, of the 16th ult., our own filei of tho Lyttelton and Otago papers not having como to hand :—

" On Monday night the Government offices were broken into and an attempt made to rob tbe treasury chest. The lock of the fire-proof aafe in which it is lodged was forced, and tho cheat hauled out into the middle of the police office. The policeman on duty, returning from bia rounds after the usual impcotion of the offices, heard n whittle, and saw either two or three men making off (torn them. On going up bo found the wtndoir of the police office open, and the chest as abovemciitioncd but unopened. The burglars were evidently disturbed when on the point of completing their intention of checking the treaiarcr'a cash balance. Tho night being wot and stormy was well choien fur tho attempt, and prevented the men being followed, or their footitcps traced. A reward of £20 has been otfercd by the/authorities, which ire hope will have tho effect of discovering tho guiliy parties and bringing them to punishment."— Lyttelton Timei, Jan. 29.
