GERALDINE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the ahove Council. was held on Tuesday evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Kennedy), and Crs. G. R. Sherratt, D. Paterson, E. H. Logan, A. J. Bell, A. South and W. J. Davison. ** DEPUTATIONS. Messrs J. P. Cliff, J. Brett, and T. Simmons waited, on the Council on behalf of th,e G.eraldine District Band. Mr Cliff said the .band had been going for many years and had been well supported. Now they had a lot of young people in the band, and the position was different. The conductor had to come. 36 miles, he was quite ready to do his duty, but. could not be expected to do so without some remuneration. He asked the Council to give them a small grant, for the band was a good one, and teaching young men to play would be good for them. Waimate had a good band, and were £l5O in credit. If .they wanted a good man they must pay him nowadays. If they were to have a band they must get support, and a grant from the Borough Council would be a good lead. The Mayor said the band must understand that all the instruments were vested in the Council, and Mr Cliff acquiesced.

Mr Cliff suggested that a grant of £25 to put the band in,a good financial position.

Cr. Paterson said be understood the donation was to help young players to receive tuition. How many would receive this benefit? It was stated that about a dozen young players would receive tuition. Cr. Paterson said th e band might obtain revenue by playing in the Park.

Mr Cliff said that in other towns the bands were paid for concerts given.

Cr. Sherratt asked what was collected at Christmas, and a n answer was promised by next meeting. The deputation retired after thanking the Mayor for its courteous reception. HOCKEY CLUB.

Mr Cowie, on behalf of the Hock- j ey Club, asked for assistance in j building a pavilion, by way of a i loan. They had funds, but only , half enough to build with. The. pav- j ilion would be erected half way j down the field. j Cr. Paterson said it had been sug- j &ested that the Hockey and Tennis I Clubs combine to put up a pavilion.

Mr Cowie said he had not heard of that before. It would cost £lO7 and they wanted two rooms. The pavilion was to be erected i u memory of members who fell in the war. ! Held over till next meeting. j CORRESPONDENCE.

Telford) wrote that in view of reports of plague in India active antirat measures be contr.u c ! d. Received. The Valuation Department wrote for a list showing new buildings erected in Geraldine Borough for the past year. Information to be supplied. Mr F. Gaby poundkeeper, notified that h,s' had impounded duringApril seven cows three horses and a

calf. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer, Mr B. Hayes, reported that the ordinary work in the streets etc., had been done. Repairs to concrete channels had been made, and crossings made to the Salvation Army Hall and other places. Asphalting to the channels had been completed on the tarred portion of the streets, and attention given to the water race. Cr. Paterson said the asphalting had greatly improved the streets, but he noticed faulty drain pipes

were washing.a few places. It was decided to notify owners to have the pipes seen to. The report was adopted. ROAD GRADER. The Clerk submitted prices for several types of road graders. Cr. Davison was asked to inquire into the Avork of one when in Christchurch. WORKS COMMITTEE. Cr. G. R. Sherratt reported the banking up of Hood water on Pleasant Valley Road when two feet of water was on the road after the heavy rain. It Avas decided to effect repairs, clean out under the plank, and put extr a planks at this plac e and another furthe, r on. Also repairs to ditch near Allan's Cr. Logan proposed that the footpath and drain in McDonald sire* 1 be put in order. The Mayor said this should be a permanent work. Cr. South advocated a u even grade .footpath "* Mc ~ Donald street to Morrison's. Cr. Paterson said the old Coun-

cil had intended to adopt lewis, but no levels had been adopted as yet. They would have to reduce levels in places, and unless they had adopted levels, owners could claim compensation. The Mayor said he thought the easiest way was to get Mr Bridges to take levels, adopt them and go with the work. This was agreed to. FINANCE REPORT. Cr. Sherratt, chairman of the Finance Committee, reported that receipts for the month had been £67 Ga. Accounts fori payment that night were £lO6 Ss 3d. The credit balance at the- Bank was £75 lis 4d leaving a deliciency of £9O 16s lid. A grant would be required for the Domain Board of £25. The .amounts outstanding were: Rates £155 Ss sd, rents £36 17s Gd, gas accounts £2B lis sd, sanitary fees £7 lis 6d, total £22S Ss 10d. DOMAIN BOARD.

The Council sat as a Domain Board. Mr South gave notice to move at next meeting that the Football Club be charged £2 10s for rent of the oval for the season, in place of £2O.
