WINCHESTER.

ST. JOHN'S CHURCH. The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. John's Church, 'Winchester, was held on Friday evening The acting-Vicar (the Rev. P. H. Pritchett) presided over a fair attendance. Mr L. 11. Orbell, on behalf of the parishioners, extended a hearty welcome to the Rev. Mr Pritchett, and hoped that his short stay iu the parish would he very enjoyable, and if a • parishioner would notify him or any sickness in the parish, he would motor the vicar out to them. The Rev. Mr Pritchett thanked Mr Orbell and the parishioners for their welcome. As they all knew, he was only there till th,& arrival of their n c\v vicar, the Rev. Mr Hervey. Mr Orbell, parishioners' warden, presented the annual report and bal-ance-sheet, Avhich, on th,© motion of Messrs J. Deßenzy and H. E. Smith, " were adopted. In the report Mr Orbell said that 4324 people had attended church during the past year, an increase of S 3 the previous year, notwithstanding that on sjefven successive Sundays the boys at the Waihi School were absent, owing to a mild epidemic in the School. Three concerts had been held during the year for the benefit of the Sunday School extension fund, which fund was thereby increas■. cl by £ls 7s 9d. The amount now in hand was £23 19s 9d. Parishioners would notice that a new photograph was now being hung in the building. This photograph was generously presented by One whose name may not be divulged. The objeict of the donor in presenting the photograph was to perpetuate the-memories of those who had paid the supreme sacrifice in the war, and who had received Sunday School instruction thene. The names of those who fell in the wa r had yet to be obtained and hung with the photograph. Thanks were due to the donor of the photograph. During the year the church had been painted and renovated at a cost of £53 9s 9d. This church was unfortunate in losing the services of Mr and Mrs E. Chennells, who had performed good work for the church, Mr Chennells as a reader, and Mrs Chennells as a member of the. choir and also a teacher in the; Sunday School. Mr Orbell, also, in his report, said that he had to make special mention

of one who much regretted being • unable to be present that evjeiiing, and referred to Mr Peter Mclnues. His ho„aojirable and faithful work in connection with the church and Sunday School was well kuowii to all. The following resolution was carried; —This meeting of Winchester parishioners although regretting the absence of Mr Peter Mclnues, fully appreciates the faithful work per- , form|e,d by 'him in the Church and Sunday School when in health, and wishes to extend to him their sincere sympathy in sickness, and trust that he may be speedily recover his strength and be soon able to continue his good work. The following were elected for the vestry: Vicar's warden, Mr J.-R. . Orford; parishioners' warden, Mr R. H. Orbell; Messrs J. Philp, C. J. Blathwayt, C. Wilks, S. Truniper, and R. E. Smith. .' Mr J. Deßenzy moved a hearty •'• vote of thanks to the vestry for their work during''the year, also to Miss Moore (superintendent of the Sunday School), the teachers of the -Sunday School, the organist (Mrs W. J. Moore), the lay readers, Mr J. . Philp for attending to the lighting and ringing the Well, Mr W. H. Lilley for auditing the books, and Miss Moore for attending to the altar vases ana th e choir. A vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs J. Philp, W. Pearce, H. E. Smith, and J. Christmas for carting the produce for the gift auction, and >•- the donors of the produce, to Mr A. H. Fenn who officiated us auctioneer, to Mr T. D. Burnett. M.P., for distributing the S. School prizes, to Mr F. Taylor for motoring the vicar and Mr Fenn up to the xniejetiiig. Before supper was handed round

by the ladies, the vicar called on Mr Burnett to present the prizes to the Sunday School children. Mr Burnett said he was pleased to he there that evening, and he was glad to hear of the success of the church and Sunday School. The prize list was as follows: First class senior girls (Miss Moor*) —Rita South 1, Edna Scott 2, Myra Opie 3. Lily Hunt, Eva Alexander, Eileen South, Gladys South. Boys' class—Ronald Wilks 1. Miss Barker's class—Ruth Stapleton 1, Molly Deßenzy 2, Poppy Blathwayt 3. Myra Hunt, Elsie Uden, Maud Uden, Ralde Davidson. Boys' Class (Mr Peter Mclnnes) —Ronald Moor e 1. ! Alex.
