FISHING.

A South Canterbury Ashman . who writes interesting angling notes under the non do plume of "Iron Blue," writes to the Press about AVinchester as follows :—"Winchester itself has fallen from its high estate. It is no longer the celebrated fishing centre in New Zealand, but the stream or the creek can stilll be relied upon for a dish of trout. In former times ■when Thomas Langdon cared for all fishermen from far and near, there was a constant stir and bustle about the place-. If one was not 'out' during the- day, it was because 'an expedition to the Rangitatai or Opihi, would hap pen that same evening, and the three horses led a 'busy life} These -horses were known by name all over the (lie country. Old Tom, Young Tom, ami Tom Between, and seldom a day passed, without each 'being requisitioned to convey an angler to his sport. I W[is never <|iiiite sure about "Tom Between," though he was supposed to be there—he or Another, —and Langdon was always ready with advice and assistance. The whole atmosphere of his comfortable house was thoroughly impregnated with fish and fishing. Rods on the racks, tackle on the tadyles, and a never-ending discussion of (lies and minnows. On a table near the door stood a weighing-machine, and in the evening eacli fisherman, as he came home, gave over his bag tot be -weighed and recorded in the register, which was faithfully kept. Afterwards the fish wore arranged on separate dishes—o it'll eateli„on its own —awl at the end of a 'jood day that table was a sight to remember."
