Jwing to the revolt against the laud tax assessment the Government have decided to pass a short Bill postponing payment for three months in the metropolitan area and four mouths outside. Nov. 5. A phenomenal rain has fallen in the Northern River districts. At Rouse 12 inches of rain fell in twenty-four hours, and considerable damage was done to the cane and maize crops by the floods. A sawmill boiler at Pambula exploded, and killed Mr Raynor, the pr prietor, whose body was fearfully mutilated. His son was seriously injured. Brisbane, Nov. 4. The Yamashino Maru, the pioneer steamer of the new Government mail service from Japan, has arrived. Three more steamers are being built for the trade between Japan and Australia. At present the service is monthly, but will soon bo increased to fortnightly. On the motion of Mr Gregory the Council shelved the Federal Bill on the voices. Mr Thynne, the Minister in charge of the measure, intimated that if the Bill was uoi passed Queensland would have to go unrepresented ,at the Conference. Nov. 5. News has been received from the police in Perth that a man named Oliver, implicated with Watson (who was recently arrested at the Cape) in the alleged misappropriation of trust funds, has bo m arrested there. Romanes, a Greek, has been arrested on a charge of stabbing a man named Smith, waiter in an oyster saloon, in the neck. The injured man succumbed almost immediately. The police have arrested five supposed French escapees at Bloomfield. A boat with three men on board, also believed to be escapees, has passed Point Archer, and the police have gone in pursuit. Adelaide, Nov 5. Grave charges have been brought against Dr Napier, of the hospital, signed by Professor Watson and Doctors Carhin and Motile, all members of the late hospital staff. He is accused of such incompetence in ordinary surgery as to have led to the death of two patients.
