S.C. HOSPITIALS AND CHARITABLE BOARD.

A meeting of this Board'was held- on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs J. Jackson (Chairman), Clulee, Barker, Talbot, and Clarke. r . The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The decision of the commissioners in the arbitration case between the Board and the Waimate County Council with referenoe to the Waimate Hospital was read. It fixed the amount which the Waimate Borough and Council should contribute at £6so.—The amount being only half that claimed by the Board, some disou'ssiori ensued,—lt was proposed by Mr Talbot,' seconded by Mr. Olulee and carried That this 1 Board strongly protest against the" decision of the Commissioners in the matter of the' appeal of the Waimate County Counoil as being in direct Opposition to the law, and the effect of tuoh decision, is, suoh as to render it impossible for the Board to exercise its functions ; that the Chairman be asked to prooeed to Wellington to represent the matter to the Government, and point out that in the event of a recurrence of such a decision being again possible in any- future levy to contributions, the Board would be forced to consider the necessity of their resigning their positions." The following accounts were passed for payment, viz.: Hospital maintenance, £lB7 5s 7d,j hospital buildings, £396 7s; oharitable aid, £246 16s. , Mr Olulee moved, and it was resolved—- " That the Secretary be instructed to give notice to the various local contributing bodies that the amounts due for the ensuing six months' operations must be p>id "at the B>ard's office by the Ist November next." ' - Mr Talbot moved, Mr Clulee seconded, and it was carried—" That the Waimate County Council be asked to remit the amount of the award n ade by the Commissioneri in re appeal case at onoe, as the finances of the Board have been greatly disarranged on account of the length of time the matter has been pending." A few charitable aid cases having been considered, the meeting terminated.
