THE KIMBERLEY GOLDFIELD.
The Premier, Sir Robert Stout, hai eceived a cable message from tbe Colonial Secretary of Western Australia, dated Perth, May 31, communicated by— Sir F. D. Broome, for generaL information. It says there is every reason to believe that Kimberley will prove an extensive goldfield. The distance from Derby is 350, and from Wyndham 300, miles. The former is at present the better 'route. There are indications of gold about 160 miles from Derby. ’ Drays can travel nearly 300 miles. Pack horses must be used the remainder of the digtance. About a thousand men are known to be en route. It is most essential to avoid hardship and risk that parties' should-be well equipped with drays, horses, tents;"and several months’ provisions, -for nbthing can at present be got except at “Derby and Wyndham, A warden hai been appointed to' the field. TheWaihora took a number of passenger* from Auckland for KimberLy goldfi Ids, A meeting was bold at Wellington on Wednesday night of-those desirous of proceeding to Kimberley, when 100 people signified their intention of proceeding there if practicable, and stated 200 could be found willing tin go. ' A committee was appointed to collect the requisite data, and report at another meeting to be held next Menday, A number <if miners (26) from; various parts of the West Coast district leave per Koraniii, en route for Kimberley; Sydney being where they will outfit. They are . mostly all veteran miners, a good many dating back to early in the fifties. As the customs authorities aliAuckland, were objecting to insufficient accommodation on the schooner Orpheus, bound for Kimberley, eight of the passengers got ? over the difficulty by shipping as extra seamen at a shilling a month. Flour at Derby, the port of the Kimberley /diggings, was quoted a foito’ght ago at per lb. ; . ;
