Four deserters from the American whaler Petrel have made a charge of great cruelty against the captain and m=>te. It is alleged that they clearn ted to reach Auckland and complain to the American Consul. Cap'ain Webb, Acting Consul, left for Russell on Wednesday night to investigate the charge.
Andrew Von Hollotn was comnvtted for trial at Christchurch on Wedne'iday for robbing his mate, Thomas Joyce, of eu order on the Farmers’ Co-operative Association for £l3. Robt. Kent and Charles Stanton Wedgf were committed for trial at Christchurch on Wednesday under a charge of robbery with violence. Them is another case of the same nature against two other men.

Pally 300 bootmakers are out of work at Auckland. By the new agreement made, only journeymen and apprentices are recognised. All improvers are thus thrown out of work.
The report of the Temperance Vigilance Committee, which was tacitly ignored by the Christchurch Licensing Committees, was read at the Lyttelton Licensing'Committee meeting, and elicited a warm discussion. The report goes to show that in the opinion ■ of the temperance people the prohibition of Sunday trading is practically inoperative in Lyttelton.
A few weeks, ago a new discovery of gold was made at Waioni", situated about lan miles from the Thames. Splendid loose prospects of gold were obtained, and in consequence a number of claims in the vicinity were pegged out. The prospectors in a day or two had a parcel of two and a half tons of general dirt, and 200 pounds of picked stuff, packed to the Thames for treatment by one of the batteries there. The crushing was finished on Thursday, wlv n the rich return of 160 ounces of retorted gold, valued at about £3 5s per ounce, was the result.
