WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Te Kiri: Tl-iere was a large attendance for the first meeting of the newlyformed branch. Mrs. Dagg, Kaponga, gave an address and Mrs. D. Hughes spoke on behalf of the Riverlea branch and Mrs. Webb on behalf of the Kaponga branch. A committee was formed as follows: President, Mrs. Dormer; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames B. Coupe and Rumble; secretary, Mrs. Crompton; treasurer, Mrs. Ewart; Press correspondent, Mrs. R. F. Tindle; committee, Mesdames H. Watson, H. Huwiler, R. Smith, R. Gilberd and Miss G. Huwiler. Rahotu: The fifth annual meeting of the Rahotu Maori Women's Institute was held on Thursday. Mrs. Waipapa presided over an attendance of 14. The treasurer's report showed a credit balance of £2 18,s 7d. The president gave a brief report of tlie work done by members during the year. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. Waipapa; vice-presidents, Mrs. Waswo and Miss K. Bishop; secretary, Miss K. Rangi; treasurer, Mrs. Darling; committee, Mrs. J. Conroy, Mrs. Kahui, Mrs. Waipapa, Mrs. Waswo, Misses K. Bishop and K. Rangi. A presentation was made to Mrs. T Conroy, the retiring secretary. She had been secretary to the institute since it started. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. J. Williamson who gave a demonstration on hairpin work. The competition for the month was won by Mrs. Lewis, who also won the cup for the most competition points during the year. Matapu: Tlie usual monihly meeting was held in the Matapu hall, Mrs. H. Sharp presiding. Owing to the incleinent weather, it was decided not to hold a garden party this year. Tlie branch decided to take part in the national dolls' competition, 'two dolls to be sent. The best plate of pikelets was won by Mrs. H. Calder, Miss M. A. Guy being second and Miss E. Calder third. The best vase of flowers for a mantelpiece was won by Mrs. D. McCallum, Mrs. M. A. Guy was second and Mrs. J. Preece third. Mrs. Lovell, Hawera, attended the February meeting and gave an interesting talk on floral decorations and also on her visit to America, where she attended the florists' conference. During the afternoon Mrs. Lovell judged a competition for a vase of flowers, the prizewinners being Mrs. D. McCallum 1, Mrs. J. Preece 2, Mrs. Riley 3. Tlie annual meeting of the branch will be held on April 13.
