HELP OF LAVAL?
STAVISKY’S CAREER INTERVENTION ALLEGED PARIS TRIAL SENSATION OUTBURST FROM DOCK FRENCH FRAUD CHARGES By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7.35 p.m. Paris, Nov. 6. The name of M. Pierre Laval, Prime Minister of France, was linked with that of the murdered Judge Prince by Bareli de Fourtu in an outburst from the dock at the Stavisky trial. Accused of allowing Stavisky to “window dress” prospectuses with his name, Fourtu, who is a former cavalry general, shouted: “How could I not have full confidence _in Stavisky seeing that a highly placed personality who to-day occupies a still higher position—why should I not name him? Laval—intervened with Judge Prince, then director of financial prosecutions, and asked him to stop a certain prosecution against Stavisky.” The prosecutor revealed that inquiries had not yet closed and further prosecutions would follow without fear or favour. Hayoite, a former secretary of Stavisky, accused the French banker and senator, Baron Maurice de Rothschild, of tricking Stavisky in a £20,000 deal in yearling horses. He further declared that jewels from Ethiopia were entrusted to Stavisky by a company of which the Emperor Haile- Selassie was honorary president. Nineteen associates of the notorious Stavisky are standing their trial on charges of participating in his frauds. They include his wife. The trial, one of the most sensational in French history, is the sequel to thorough investigations of the 20 months since Stavisky’s death.
