ROSEBERY RACE MEETING THIRD TO NORMAN CONQUEST. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 11 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 16. At the Rosebery races to-day Norman Conquest was third to Grand Mogul and Closing Time in the first division of the Flying Handicap. Debham was unplaced in the first division and Sir Walter was unplaced in the second division of the Caceyville Stakes. RATHER TALL STORY FISHERMEN AND RACING Trainers, like fishermen, never tire of telling stories of their experiences, but it would be difficult to find a taller yarn than that related by a well-known Chicago trainer. This trainer had once, it appears, a great mare that had won every race. He took her to Agua Caliente, but everybody was wise to her ability, and he could not get a bet down on her. He had an idea. He would paint white feel on her and no one would recognise her, and he could race her under an assumed name. The great day arrived. He told it this way;— “At the quarter my mare three lengths ahead. At the half ten lengths. At the three-quarter post, oh, boy, twenty lengths ahead. Now the stretch. Come on, you beautiful girl. Thirty, forty lengths. And then—and then—the strangest thing happened. That mare sat right down on that track and foaled a colt. My heart sank. But I’m gosh-dumed if the colt didn’t get up and run for that finish and beat all the best horses in Mexico.”
