HAWERA STABLES

“Limited.”)

WAVERLEY AND TRENTHAM. PERFORMANCES CN THE TRACK.

(By

Although the fields for the Waverley meeting are not, numerically as big as Was expected ea&i race has a sufficiency of well-balanced competitors to ensure exciting racing and a wide range of betting. Fine weather is the only thing needed for another successful meeting. With over 20 horses likely to compete, the Hawera centre looks like playing a prominent part in the decision of the events. In the hurdle race Ruaform, Bay Sand and Dombey should prove capable of keeping the remainder of the field busy Dombey' has yet to make his appearance over the hurdles but has schooled well. In the handicapping he appears harshly treated compared with Ruaform and Kaola. Friesland and Knockout are the centre representatives in the open six furlongs event, which contains a select though small field. Of the six Hawera horses listed for the maiden race Celeste is likely to be reserved for the Wilson Highweight, and Corowa has had his preparation interfered with by a slight strain that may prevent his running. Kia-ora, Supreme Court, Autumn Leaf and Kentucky Song are all doing satisfactory work and displaying sufficient speed to win this class of event. All four have been placed in similar events. Passing Fancy is still suffering from soreness and there appears little chance of her being ready for the seven furlongs Wilson Hack Race. Royal Dispute and Celeste have done a fair amount of work which should enable them to run out the distance, but Princess Gowrie, though from a stout family, may require more time before appealing as a winning prospect, Ruri, Aga Khan, Fersen; Carfex and ©riel present a strong front in the Waverley Cup. Ruri and Fersen are also engaged at Trentham" and may be taken south. Both Ruri and Fersen are in capital order and will be in favour if started at Waverley. Aga Khan has coms on splendidly of. late and is galloping well while Carfex, despite his wind trouble, continues to do his track work in great style. Oriel has made marked improvement and will prove an interesting outsider if started in the Waverley Cup. y t Friesland and Oriel also appear in the Moumahaki Stakes with Bay Sand, Careful and Bantry. The last after his forward running at Ellerslie would claim attention, but he is also nominated for Trentham. With a number of recent winners engaged, the Moumahaki Stakes should prove one of the best betting races on the programme. In the Jackson Memorial sprint over five furlongs most of the horses have prior engagements but a good field is assured with fresh horses in Gold Gleam, Collodion, Eara, Red Panther, Silk Sox and Topthorn arresting the attention of backers. Hawera has several horses nominated for the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting. The two-year-old Notium has progressed steadily since racing at Avondale and there is every reason to consider him an improved horse. As the three horses that finished in front >;.of Notium at Avondale are not in "■ the Wellesley Stakes he looks to have an exCellent chance of finishing close up. Gay Chief returned from his unsuccessful trip to Ellerslie by yesterday’s train. Gay Chief ran a good race in the Musket Stakes on the second day and no doubt will improve. He bears the mark of the knock he received before going north arid his trip to Trentham has not been finally decided on. J. Fryer has Ruri and the two-year-old Ned Cuttie engaged and will probably take the pair south. Ned Cuttie is a promising sort and if only for educational purposes the trip should benefit him. A decision as to Lowenberg and Fersen has not yet been arrived at and the same applies to Bantry. Both Banr try and Lowenberg arrived from Ellerslie yesterday. The apprentice jockey C. Sheild lost no time in getting into action after riding at Ellerslie on Monday. Leaving Auckland after' six o’clock he was on the Hawera tracks riding work on Tuesday morning at 5.30. Onewhetu and the hurdler Soloist are still on the easy list as the result of minor complaints. A description of the race won at Moonee Valley by Link Divine reveals that the filly won brilliantly, though narrowly, after being well back in the early stages of the race. Incidentally she put up a fresh track record. for the distance and beat a hot favourite in Manorlea, who was considered the bet of the day. With regard to the" record, this had been broken half an hour earlier by Spokesman in the first division of Link Divine’s race, but the Hawera filly clipped 3-ss. off the-new time. A communication from Mr. W. Kirkland, owner of Link Divine, received a few days ago states that tire filly’s most important start , will be in the Wakeful Stakes, of £750, a race for three-year-old fillies over a mile. It will be remembered that O. Cox was successful in winning the Wakeful Stakes with Golden Hair two seasons ago. Link Divine has incurred a 51b. penalty for the race. . Mr. W. Williams’ two jumpers, Just Off and Panloff, were both engaged to run at the Waikato Hunt Club’s meeting on Labour Day but. the first-named having gone sore, Panloff _ will be the stable's only representative. Panloft schooled capitally over a round of the hurdles yesterday, being capably handled by Fryer’s new hurdle horseman, W. Webby, who will have the mount on him at Cambridge. McLEAN ' STAKES WINNER •BREEDING OF PELMET Pelmet, easy winner of the McLean Stakes at Dunedin on Thursday, gave Limona, outstanding sira of classic winners in Australia and New Zealand at present, his first two-year-old classic winner in the southern province of the Dominion. It was also the first classic success that has been gained by Mr. E Hay, Pigeon Bay (Banks Peninsula), who bought Pelmet at the last January sales for 190gns. Pelmet is a well-bred brown daugh ter of Limond and the Thespian—Cowl mart. Curtain, so she Is a full sister to the Sydney winner Gladswood and a close relative to Veilmond. It is one of the best Koatanui families, among other good performers in the ne in recent years being The Masquerader, The Monk. Rational, Habit, Prince Pombal, Mask, Glenross, Lady Desmond and Farceur. At her first st irt Pelmet, who is trained by T. Gillett at Riccarton, was beaten by only a head bj Wild Chase in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton, and this was sufficient to account for her favouritism on Thursday.
