MAIDEN WINS GUINEAS

ENTAIL’S GOOD . EFFORT GOOD TEST OF STAYER CALIENTE’S PERFORMANCE (By “Hurry On.") It is not often that a horse loses its maiden status in a big three-year-old classic, but Entail opened his winning account by collecting the Great Northern Guineas on Saturday. In his only two previous starts this season he was second to Flitacre in the Maiden at Wanganui on the opening day and fifth behind Alchemic in the Guineas on the second day. At that meeting he seemed rather leggy. giving the impression that he might not be at his best until the autumn - , . He was an improved horse when he paraded at Ellerslie but still far from really ready, and it was not surprising to find him starting the outsider in the field of seven. He was always handy but few were seriously considering his chances until he put in his appearance with a strong challenge on the outside over the last furlong. Here he finished far too solidly for Galilee and Bantry to win going away by three-quarters of a length. As the pace was on all the way, the first five furlongs being cut out in 60 4-55., and the mile in Im. 38 3-55., Entail’s performance was that of a stayer. Despite his decisive win both his owner, Mr. G. M. Currie, and his trainer, W, Raynor, confidently expect Entail to make a big improvement yet, and Mr. Currie does not expect he will be at his best until next season. Entail is a bay colt by the Son-in-law horse Posterity from Episode, one of the Eulogy family, being by Limond from Homage, by Absurd from Eulogy. Homage is the dam of Heritage and Honour. UNLUCKY GALILEE GAME, CONSISTENT FILLY The Chief Ruler—Lady Bede ffllly Galilee has started six times this season for one win, three seconds, one third and once unplaced. Since amongst her seconds have been the Great Northern and Avondale Guineas, she must be accounted an unlucky'filly. In both events she suffered narrow defeats after attempting to win all the way. She was installed favourite in the Epsom Handicap on Monday, and though she finished out of 9 place she received anything but the best of passages, meeting trouble at a critical stage just before entering the straight. Her turn must come and, being such a good beginner, she may not find even a race like the Railway Handicap beyond her capabilities. TARANAKI HORSES BANTRY; LOWENBERG Thoufea he failed to pay a dividend in either of his two starts, Bantry earned £lOO in stakes as a result of his thirds in the Guineas and the Normanby Hack. He had.every chance on both days, but though he ran two splendid races he was not good enough. He begins smartly enough and if raced over six and seven furlongs he should not be long in winning again. Running down the back after half a mile had been covered in the Guineas, Lowenberg was going so well that he seemed sure to take a prominent part in the finish. However, as soon as he came to the first turn he was in trouble. He obviously did not like the reverse turns, and from then on he was never going comfortably and his usual strong finish was sadly lacking. With the lefthanded going at Trentham there may be a different tale to tell. CALIENTE IMPRESSES IN NEW ZEALAND CUP Caliente’s performance in winning the Mitchelson Cup last Saturday was most impressive. She had been galloping very well on the tracks before the gathering and came in for good support considering her lack of form. However, she fully justified the backing. She looked exceptionally fit in the birdcage, and from the time that she moved up into a handy position half a mile from home she was always going like a winner. She was in command when the field straightened up and, running- on strongly, -gave nothing a chance over the last furlong. Her owner had displayed great faith in Caliente, and the good stake was a reward for his patience. She is engaged in the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton next month, and as she is by Polazel from Fortune’s Wheel, a full sister to the mighty. Phar Lap, the extra half-mile should not inconvenience her. On Ellerslie form she appears the best prospect of those seen in action last week for the Riccarton two mile event. related TO HAVASPOT SMART SYDNEY FILLY Spirits, who won the Gimcrack Stakes at Randwiek on Wednesday, is by the Polymelus horse Tippler, whose dam, Sippet, is by Swynford. Joan Clare, the dam of Spirits, Is by Thru (son of The Welkin) from Belle of Clare, by Flavus from Claribella, by Wallace. Spirits is a sister to Malvina, a previous Gimcrack winner, and her dam is a half-sister to No Belle, who left Havaspot and Dermid, two smart gallopers by Tippler. This is a family that has produced some great performers, Aurum, Auraria and Desert Gpld being three of its notable representatives. Spirits races in the colours of her trainer, J. King, who also won the Metropolitan on Monday with Oro. MOONEE VALLEY RACES CHENARS SCORES THIRD PLACE. Rec. 11 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 16. At the Moonee Valley races to-day Dazzling Raid and Cape Fair were unplaced in the Ardsley Tri .1 Handicap. Chenars was third, but Chief Light and Isaacs were unplaced, in the second division of the Clyde Welter Handicap. North Cape and Korero were unplaced in the Lyndhurst Handicap and Whernside and Lady Bunsby were unplaced in the Tally-ho Handicap.
