CROQUET SEASON BEGUN

PARK CLUB OFFICIAL CEREMONY.

The croquet season in South Taranaki commenced yesterday with the official opening of the Park Club at Hawera. Heavy rain in the early afternoon prevented play on the lawns, though in an interval of fine weather three competitions were played. .. A welcome was accorded visitors from the Hawera and Okaiawa clubs and members by the. president, Mrs. J. W. Harding. Best wishes for a successful season were expressed by the Mayoress of Hawera, Mrs. J. E. Campbell who drove the first ball through the hoop and declared the season opened. Mesdames W. G. Strange (Hawera) and Williams (Okaiawa) spoke for the visitors and Mrs. Harding presented a floral spray to Mrs. Campbell. Competitions were won as follows: Ring the bell, Mrs. Williams; circle croquet, Mrs. Guy; crazy ladder croquet, Mrs. Reece.

All turns out happily in the end with the two ancient enemies united and happy in the engagement of their respective offsprings.
