RAIN MARS BOWLING

HAWERA CLUB’S OPENING DAY.

LARGE GATHERING AT GREENS.

It was only the green and the gardens that were dampened by the heavy rain which prevented bowlers assembled for the Hawera club's official opening yesterday afternoon from enjoying their favourite pastime. The utmost enthusiasm prevailed, the speakers striking a note of cheery optimism for the success of the new season. Fine weather in the morning, except for a light sprinkling of rain, had caused bowlers from almost every club in South Taranaki from Waverley to Opunake and even from farther afield to assemble at the green. The rain in the early afternoon, however, effectively prevented play on the green, v.hich had been excellently prepared. It was almost incredible how quickly mother bowling season had arrived, said the president, Mr. D. McCormick, in extending a welcome to visitors and club members. The presence of so many spoke volumes for the good fellowship existing among bowsers and was indicative of the good wishes of members of so many other clubs. He was pleased to welcome so many women, who seemed as keenly interested in the welfare of the club as the members. Their work at the afternoon tea tables was appreciated.

Good wishes for the season were expressed by Mr. F. W. Mason on behalf cf the Taranaki Bowling Centre and by Mr. D. G. Smart, a member of the Hawera Borough Council. After Mrs. McCormick had thrown up, the first kitty and Mrs. R. Tait had rolled the'first bowl Mr. McCormick declared the season officially open. Mr. Rod Syme, instructor in agriculture to the Taranaki Education Board in the South Taranaki area, was congratulated at yesterday’s meeting of the board for his work for the South Taranaki Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs’ Association, the annual report of which was tabled at the meeting.
