NORMANBY SCHOOL

AVERAGE ATTENDANCE DOWN.

EXCLUSION OF MAORI CHILDREN.

The exclusion of Maori children from the Normanby school for a week last month because cf the prevalence of typhoid fever adversely affected the average attendance, reported the headmaster, Mr. F. Scott, to the monthly meeting of the Normanby school committee on Monday’ night. The roll number for September was 116 and the average attendance 97.7. The present roll number was 113 and the average attendance for the past week was 105.7, the highest attendance being 111. The health of the children was now very 'good and the attendance satisfactory, Mr. Scott said. The school received two visits from Dr. M. Champtaloup and several visits from nurses. All the Maori children were inoculated twice against typhoid. There were present at the meeting Mr. A. Galloway (chairman), Mesdames W. G. Gane and T. Evans, Messrs. C. L. Hay, P. Whitelock, W. H, Bennett and T. Evans (secretary). Repairs were effected at the school and at the headmaster’s residence, it was reported. The agricultural instructor, Mr. R. Syme, visited the school and expressed approval of the proposed work in the gardens for the summer. Deck tennis was very popular and more courts were required. Senior pupils had been playing tennis on the town courts under the supervision of Miss Payne. A cricket team was entered in the Hawera district school competition and that would entail three matches at Hawera and probably two at Normanby. The committee authorised the headmaster to procure the necessary material for two more courts for deck tennis. The Egmont A. and P. Association asked that the children bo granted a holiday on people’s day of the forthcoming show. It was decided to grant the request. The visiting committee reported on repairs made to the school piano and to the windmill. It was decided that the portraits of the King and Queen given to the school should be framed and hung in the vestibule. .... Messrs. Evans and Whitelock were appointed a visiting committee for the month. , At the conclusion of the meeting the committee was entertained to supper by Mr. and Mrs. Scott.
