Miss L. Mulligan, Reef ton, is the guest of Mrs J. S. McKay and Miss L. Milner. Miss K. Hickey, Normanby, spent the week-end as the guest of Mrs. D. Rothery. Mrs. Pettitt, Hawera, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. A. Chong, Manaia. Kaponga and Awatuna friends paid a surprise visit to Miss Sadie Bertie, Upper Manaia Road, on Wednesday evening on the occasion of her birthday. The evening was spent with cards, games and dancing, a happy time being spent. Among those present iJ were Mesdames J. Guy, J. Free, G. Bertie and the Misses E. Frost, D. Guy, D. Kirkcaldy, L. Davies, S. Bertie and M. Keheley. WOMEN’S GOLF DINNER INNOVATION AT WAITARA. To celebrate the end of a successful season, the women of the Manakorihi Golf Club held a dinner at the Masonic Hotel on Monday evening. The club captain, Mrs. Pritchard, presided, and in welcoming members said she hoped that the dinner would become an annual event. Toasts to the club champions were proposed and several short speeches were made. Mrs. H. Alexander sang. The Barclay Cup and the Manakorihi Cup were presented to Mrs. Fitzgerald. After the dinner, the gathering adjourned to play bridge and five hundred at Mrs. Bums’. Miss I. Foreman, who is to be married shortly, was presented with a silver savoury dish. . The bridge prizes were won by Mrs. Pritchard (first), Miss Knight (hidden number) and Mrs. Whyte (consolation). Mrs. Beckbessinger won the first prize for five hundred. WOMEN’S DIVISION Egmont Village: An enjoyable meeting was held at the home of Mrs. T. Murphy

recently. Mrs. Meuli presided over a large attendance of members and visitors. Correspondence from headquarters was held over till next month. A competition for the best sponge without butter, which attracted many entries, was judged by Mrs. H. Winter, Inglewood. Mrs. J. Adamson won the first prize and Mrs. G. Marsh and Miss Morton (equal) the second. Mrs. Winter demonstrated the making of flake pastry and informed the . members of some helpful hints and recipes. She was accorded a vote of thanks. Afternoon tea, which included the pastry, was served by Mesdames Murphy, R.. Hurlstone and J. Adamson. '

Toko: At the monthly meeting the vicepresident, Mrs. Jones, over an attendance of 31. Sympathy with Mrs. Lees, who is in hospital, and with Mrs. Platt, who is ill, was expressed. The minutes of last conference and a request for books to be sent to the Dominion book club'were received. It was decided to collect books at next meeting to be sent to the book club, which is now situated at Te Kuiti. Mrs. Harper kindly offered to lend patterns of knitted toys to anyone who cared to have them. It was decided to buy 2s 6d worth of health stamps to help the health, camps for delicate children. Mrs. Harper gave a special prize for the best article costing less than Is and suitable for a Christmas present. Miss N. Sextus and Mrs. I. Grierson, of the visiting committee, reported having visited two sick members. The new committee is Mesdames L. Milne, Rowe, Stallard, Needham and Miss Stallard. It was decided to look after the tearooms for the carnival committee on gala day, and to supply some of the small goods Mrs. E. Milne and helpers consented to take charge of the baby show. The competition for the best made and- neatest child’s dress made from a print resulted: Mrs. J. Clemow 1, Miss D. Needham 2, Mrs. R. G. Grierson 3. The points prize resulted: Mrs. R. G. Grierson 1, Mrs. Fetch 2, ‘ Miss Needham 3, A sing, say, play or pay roll call was held and was fairly well supported. Mrs. P. Clemow, who judged the competition, was accorded a vote of thanks. » •

Fraser Road: Mrs. L. B. Galbraith presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting. Mrs. H. Sanderson demonstrated a method of making and covering a box ottoman. Mrs. R. Thompson bound and furnished a peggy square quilt. A bring and buy stall in aid of the health camp funds did good business. A competition for three heads of wallflowers was won by Mrs. S. Death. Mrs. J. Thompson and Mrs. P. Druce being second and third. Another competition was a man’s buttonhole resulted: Miss E. Sanderson 1, Mrs. L. A. Jennings 2, Mrs. J. Thompson and Mrs. A. Treweek 3 equal. The hostesses were Mrs. J. Thompson and Mrs.. N. Smyth. Waverley: The seventh birthday party was attended by a large number of members and friends, including presidents of three other branches, Mrs. McPhail, Wanganui, Mrs. Taylor, Alton, and Mrs. Wither, Whenuakura. The president, Mrs. Macfarlane, welcomed the guests and read a cable from the Misses Kennedy, Sydney, and messages' from Mesdames Wickham, Forrester and B. Bremer. Items were contributed by Misses Kendrick (Wanganui), Miss Gammon (Wanganui), Mrs. Jones (Patea), Miss Hall (Kakaramea) and Miss Patterson. A humorous sketch was presented by Mesdames P. V. Graves, Boyer, James, Newland and Miss Patterson. A cake presented by Mrs. Alex. Aiken and iced by Mr. James was cut by Mrs. Newland, senr. A paper hat making competition was judged by Mrs. Wither, Whenuakura, who awarded the first prize to Mrs. Bert Wilson, the runners-up being Miss Kendrick and Mrs. G. Alexander. the branch was visited by Mrs. C. K. Wilson, the Dominion president. Although the district had counter-attrac-tions a large number of members gathered at Simpson’s hall to meet Mrs. Wilson, who gave an address covering a ' good deal of ground and invited questions. On dental clinics being mentioned Mrs. Julian (Niho Niho) said the Ohura ■ branch had approached the authorities, who had stated it would be .necessary to have 1300 children before' a clinic could be considered. Mrs. Hedley Loft proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Wilson. The president of the Farmers’ Union, Mr. N. Dougherty, and the secretary, Mr. Denison, addressed the meeting. . Mr. Dougherty agreed with Mrs. Wilson’s contention, that to place single men in camps was not in the interests of the country, or of the young men themselves. Messrs. Dougherty and Denison and members signed forms Mrs. Wilson had with her regarding provision of milk for school children. Visitors present were Mrs. MacDonald ana Mrs. Siteman (Aukopau branch). Hurford Road: There was an attendance of 18 at the monthly meeting. It was decided to send a small donation to a needy family at Halcombe. An interesting talk was given by Miss N. Berridge on the girls’ educational week. The hostesses were Mesdames F. Higgins and H. Krutz. Manaia: On Thursday at the home of Mrs. E. Bennett, Sutherland Road, a gift evening was tendered Miss C. MePhillips on the eve of her marriage. There was a large attendance and among those present were Mesdames Suton, Alvis, I Allan, Bloor, Bennett, Bell, Brown, Byrne, Gather, Davis, French, Gopperth* Huckstep, Hemsley, Hansen, Merrie, McPhillips, Mcßreen, Reardon, Russell, Symes, Paterson, Vincent, Walters, Misses Gopperth, M. Bennett, N. Bennett, M. Symes, and J. Bloor. Miss McPhillips was presented with a bouquet by Mrs. Paterson, president of the branch, and Mrs. McPhillips received a posy from Mrs. Russell. Mrs. Paterson on behalf of the members referred to the popularty of Miss McPhillips and tc her kindness and assistance. Mr. J. A. Hansen also spoke. Mr. Wilcocks replied on behalf of Miss McPhllips. A small presentation was made to Mrs. Hemsley. The evenng was spent in cards, games, competitions,, etc. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett were thanked for their hospitality. At the monthly meeting Mrs. Paterson presided over a good attendance. The competition was sing, say or pay. The hostesses were Mesdames Alvis and Burrell.
