ICE ON THE MOUNTAIN
SNOW STILL THICK ON EGMONT.
SEVERAL FEET OVER SYME HUT.
Some idea of the thickness of snow still on .Mount Egmont was gained by a party of Mount Egmont Alpine Club members which visited Syme Hut on Fantham’s Peak during the week-end. Digging operations above the hut revealed the fact that there is still seven or eight feet of snow on top of the hut. Timber required for strengthening the rafters of the roof, the necessity for which was found' to be evident by a party which entered the hut recently, has been carried up by several of those who have climbed Fantham’s Peak recently.’ Having climbed to the hut with the party last week-end, Mr. F. Bourke, Hawera, set out to .make an ascent of the main peak on skis. He was followed by Messrs. Syme, C. Dingle and A. Thody climbing on foot, and when the snow became too hard for ski-climbing Mr. Bourke joined the trio. Together they completed the ascent. The ice was very hard on the latter‘part of the climb, considerable step-cutting being necessary on both the ascent and destent. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The official closing of the Te Ngutu Golf Club will take place on Saturday, play to commence at 1 o’clock.
