A PLACE OF BEAUTY
HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL GARDENS. RESULT OF TEACHER’S WORK. One of tlie prettiest bits of Hawera at the present time is the garden surrounding the Hawera Technical High School buildings. The passer-by along Camberwell Road cannot fail to bo attracted by the big grey buildings set in an expanse of neatly cropped lawns, with Virginia crqeper spreading over their walls and patches of the brightest colours around their base. A bonder of aubretia backed by a row of polyanthus skirts the edges of the beds on either side of the front entrance to the comers of the building, while behind the borders are several kinds of gaily coloured plants—wallflowers, marigolds and anemones. The show place of the gardens is undoubtedly a bed of multi-coloured ranunculi and anemones behind a border of Virginia stock on the side of the main building. On the west side there is a showy bed of polyanthus. In front and at the side of the home science block are beds in which wallflowers and violas bloom in profusion. Along the fence adjoining the entrance to the showgrounds tflere is an area of shrubs that is picturesque. The play area at the back is in grass neatlj’ kept, and the contrast with the concrete paths around the school makes a pleasing picture.
The work of planting and tending the gardens has during the past two seasons been chiefly undertaken by Miss D. Garnett, a member of the teaching staff. She spends a considerable amount of her spare time in tire gardens, the appearance of which make her efforts well worth while.
