ELTHAM ATHLETICS

CLUB PRESENTS ANNUAL REPORT.

ELECTION OF SEASON’S OFFICERS.

The annual report of tire Eltham Amateur Athletic Club presented last night stated that the trophy winners for the season were:—Girls, Miss J. Glentworth; boys, A. Lethbridge; women, Miss. S. Hitchcock; men’s sprints, E. G. Smith; men’s distance events, J. Knight;. field events, R. Burt; walking events, C. W. Coleman; footballers’ sprints, M. Sheehy; footballers’ field events, R. Bourke.

The committee thanked all who helped in the club’s efforts during the season. Special thanks were due to Mr. H. Reynolds for his help and attention to the grounds. The past season had been successful, and in addition to club evenings several meetings were held. On December 13 an electric light meeting was staged and drew a large number of competitors from Taranaki clubs, the meeting being a financial success. The West Coast (N. 1. centre championships were conducted by the club and were successful both from a sporting and financial point of view. The club had made a specialty during the last season of catering for the activities of the primary school children. This branch of the sport was being fostered by the Primary Schools’ Athletic Association, and the club was urged to give the association its full support. A competition for footballers was held during the season, trophies being competed for in sprint and field events. The finances were healthy, there being a surplus of assets over liabilities of £27 11s. The equipment was kept up-to-date, ten hurdles being acquired at a cost of £5. It was hoped to increase the number during the coming season to at least 30 flights. A first-class vaulting pole was purchased, being selected, by Mr. F. S. Barraclough, Christchurch. The loss of one of the keenest members of the club, Mr. R. E. Thomas, who at the close of the season was transferred to New Plymouth, was recorded. Mr. Thomas was the club handicapper and a past president. The president in moving the adoption of the report spoke of the excellent conduct of the West Coast championships under the auspices of the club. He urged the encouragement of school sport and referred to the loss sustained by the departure of Mr. Thomas. As handicapper he would be very much missed in the coming season. Mr. Whiting appealed for an increased membership, pointing out that the fee was small. It was not important that new members be outstanding athletes, because they could be classified and coached.

Officers elected were: Patron, Dr. D. H. Saunders; president, Mr. A. G. Whiting; vice-presidents, four; secretary and treasurer, Mr. T. R. Bourke; committee, Messrs. - T. Bennett, F. R. S. Bullen, E. G. Smith, Lei. Nees and Miss R. Reakes; auditor,'Mr. H. N. Murray; delegates to sub-centre, Messrs. A. G. Whiting and W. Ricketts. Members elected were Messrs. T. R. Bourke, S. Clare, F. R. S. Bullen and R. Sharp.
