£l500 JEWEL THEFT

DARING RAID AT CHRISTCHURCH. LOCK OF DOOR SHATTERED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Sept. 5. The door of “The Ring House,” a jeweller’s shop in Cashel Street, was burst open last evening and jewellery to the value of £l5OO was stolen. With great daring the thief carried out his raid at 6,50 p.m-, shattering the lock with a kick or a blow, systematically going through the stock and selecting the most valuable articles, and then making his way at a walking pace to Colombo Street, where all trace of him was lost.

The burglar was seen coming out of the shop by a passer-by, who followed him when he found that the door of the shop was broken. However, the marauder must have moved quickly after turning the c -ner into Colombo Street, for when the other man tried to catch up and keep him in sight he had no success.
