TARANAKI PUBLICITY
PHOTOGRAPHS AT SYDNEY MOUNTAIN HOUSE ENLARGEMENTS SHIPPING OFFICES AND HOTELS. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHEME. The move to introduce publicity for Taranaki at Sydney, described by Mr. E. C. Hayton as the Empire’s second largest city, situated only 60 hours’ steaming from New Plymouth, was advanced a step by the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce at its quarterly meeting at New Plymouth last night. Mr. Hayton reported that large institutions at Sydney were prepared to hang enlarged photographs of Mount Egmont and the northern hostel in prominent positions. The chamber, which agreed to provide one such photograph, appointed a sub-committee to ask other public bodies to do the same. Full-size enlargements could be delivered and hung at Sydney for a total cost of 555, said Mr. Hayton, who introduced the proposal at a previous meeting. His suggestion was that the chamber itself should procure on- photograph, a specimen of which he produced, and that other local bodies should be asked to do likewise. The New Zealand trade commissioner at Sydney had promised support, said Mr. Hayton, and institutions such as the Hotel Australia and the Huddart Parker and Union shipping companies had agreed to hang the photographs prominently. The chamber was being asked to incur an expense of 55s and to allow a small committee to endeavour to get other local bodies to act similarly. He was at Sydney in April and May and was impressed with the possibility of the suggestion as a fine gesture, continued Mr. Hayton. It would be good publicity for Taranaki which, he thought, was not at present being advertised as it should be. The facilities and scenery available for tourist traffic in Australia were as nothing compared with those in New Zealand, and Sydney, the second largest city in the Empire, was only 60 hours away.
Mr. J. McNeill supported Mr, Hayton’s proposal and the chairman. Mr. E. V. Tingey, and Messrs. D. F. C. Saxton and Hayton were appointed a sub-com-mittee as suggested.
